Short Description of Recipient Organization:
As Alabama's only public, residential high school for students pursuing advanced studies in mathematics, science, and the humanities, the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science is truly a center for excellence. Graduates have an average ACT score of 27.2. More than 50 percent of the faculty hold Doctorate or terminal degrees. And, more than 90 percent of graduating seniors receive scholarships.

The Mobile-based school was established in 1989 by the Alabama State Legislature to identify, challenge, and train Alabama¹s future leaders. This is exactly what is happening: Recently, students have been working with the U.S. Department of Defense to build a robot that detects landmines; biology and physics students are testing the water and air quality around Mobile Bay; choral students have performed at Carnegie Hall; and students have participated in energy and plasma research at Princeton University.

ASMS is truly a public school, available to any talented and motivated applicants who are selected. In fact, throughout its history ASMS has drawn students from every county in Alabama. Students do not pay tuition or boarding expenses. Admission is selective.
