The medical humanist pilot program (2002-2005) proved of benefit to the patient, family, medical practitioners and the institution. Incorporating a medical humanist on an inter-disciplinary team served to bridge the differences in language, facilitated doctor-patient communication, fostered collaborative healthcare decision-making and helped to improve health outcomes. The inclusion of the medical humanist on hospital committees, which included ethics and palliative care, had an influence on the culture of the institution and it’s patient care policy. The model, informed by the arts and humanities, translated into a practical and effective approach between medicine as a science and caring for patients as a humanistic art.
